10 Actors Who Could Play Mysterio in a Sony Solo Movie

It has been revealed that Sony is working on making its very own Mysterio movie, and doing such leaves the door open for many cerebral actors to throw their hats into the ring. Mysterio is a well known Spider-Man villain, yet he still hasn’t had anyone play him on the silver screen. There are only a few actors who could do this character justice, and I believe that I pinned a few of them down.

1. Andrew ScottImage result for andrew scott

Everyone involved in the show Sherlock has gotten too immensely famous to even find time to shoot the program once every two or three years, and Andrew Scott should be no exception. With his portrayal of Moriarty, he has proved that he can play the most mysterious and charismatic characters anyone could come up with, and put himself out there as one of the best villains to ever grace a TV screen. If given a chance to bring that skill set to a film, I believe he could absolutely kill it as someone like Mysterio.

2. Cillian MurphyImage result for cillian murphy

Cillian Murphy’s bread and butter is playing characters that are mentally unhinged and smarter than the average bear, and Mysterio is directly in that wheelhouse. He’s played villains along the same lines before, such as Scarecrow in Batman Begins, and has really shown a knack for doing such. While he’s not the biggest name in the world, Murphy could give an excellent enough performance to make up for that, and could make people reconsider their original opinions on all of the upcoming Sony supervillain movies.

3. Elijah WoodImage result for elijah wood

Mysterio doesn’t need to be played by an actor that’s physically imposing, just someone who can be weird and mentally unstable, and Elijah Wood can supply that. While he’s mainly been doing comedic roles as of late, his performances in both Wilfred and Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency still show that he can play a character who is eccentric and unhinged. As long as he’s able to put a serious and possibly sinister spin on the characters he’s already been playing in recent history, he would undoubtedly make a terrific Mysterio.

4. James McAvoyImage result for james mcavoy

Yes, McAvoy is currently playing the patriarch of the X-Men in the Fox movie franchise right now, but how amazing would his performance be as Mysterio? If you’ve seen Split, then you know that he can play characters that are calculating as well as criminally insane to a tee. He plays characters that are preposterly smart in almost every one of his roles, and in doing such has created a resume unmatched by any other when it comes to playing the villain in question.

5. Ralph Fiennes Image result for ralph fiennes

While he may be a little older than all of the other people on this list, there’s no doubt that Ralph Fiennes has the potential to make any villain into the most notorious you will ever see. As far as performance goes, Fiennes could be the best option out there, and could improve the movie as a whole. If he would take the role, there’s no doubt in my mind that he would elevate everything about this entire project.

6. John TravoltaImage result for john travolta

Ok, just hear me out on this one. While you may be thinking of the John Travolta that was in Grease and Saturday Night Fever, the truth is that the older, more mature Travolta could be cut out for a role like Mysterio. As far as playing somebody who is not exactly what they seem, and having raw starpower, Travolta is right up there with any other actor you could come up with.

7. Dan StevensImage result for dan stevens

If you’ve watched the show Legion, then you know for a fact that Stevens is equipped to play the strangest characters out there, and has a sinister aura and look about him. He has an extremely cerebral acting style, and that could translate over to Mysterio perfectly. He’s just starting to become a household name, and having his very own superhero movie could put more of a spotlight on him, as well as giving the world an excellent movie to watch.

8. Johnny DeppImage result for johnny depp

You might think that Johnny Depp is too big to do a movie with such an uncertain future, but the truth is that Depp needs anything he can get right now. He’s not exactly the most popular person as of late, but he could still bring his expertise to Mysterio in extraordinary fashion. Johnny specializes in playing characters that are out of the ordinary, and taking this role could turn out to be another classic performance by the actor.

9. Colin FarrellImage result for colin farrell

Colin Farrell is in the sweet spot of being an actor that people know, yet not being such a huge name that he wouldn’t do a movie like this. As far as his performance as Mysterio goes, he is seasoned in playing villains, and has played primarily elusive characters in most of his recent films. I believe that he would be able to make the necessary adjustments to take on a project like this, and is one of those actors that can take any film and make it better with their presence.

10. Bryan CranstonImage result for bryan cranston

I mean, it just doesn’t get any better than Bryan Cranston. He is exactly what every actor strives to be, and has shown next level deception in performances such as Walter White in Breaking Bad. Casting Cranston as Mysterio would peak the interest of everyone who is familiar with his work, and would certainly quench the thirst for playing a Marvel villain that he has previously expressed.
