Ruby Rose Colored Glasses: 7 Actresses Who Can Star in Batwoman

In a shocking turn of events, Ruby Rose announced that she will step down from her starring role in The CW’s hit superhero drama Batwoman on the night of the season one finale. This will cause the showrunners to look for a new star to take over from the perfectly cast Rose, and attempt to explain the drastic change to the character in the second season. While it looks as though no one could do better as Kate Kane than Ruby Rose, there are still a handful of actresses that may be able to fill out the suit in spectacular fashion.

1. Katherine Barrell

Katherine Barrell is best known for her supporting role as Officer Nicole Haught on the popular Syfy show Wynonna Earp and has yet to break out as a star in her own right. However, given her recent experience and empowered personality, Barrell has more than earned the right to star in a CW drama. It has been made clear that this character will remain in the LGBT community, and with Barrell being married to a man while being open about her bisexuality, her casting could be used to widen the array of inclusion even more.

2. Ashley Benson

While Ashley Benson was one of the stars of the insanely popular Pretty Little Liars, she is perhaps best known for her relationship with Suicide Squad actress Cara Delevingne. Being so open and public about her previous relationship with Delevigne has made her somewhat of an icon in the LGBT community, and that in addition to her acting prowess creates an amazing amount of substance for her casting. Benson is more than capable of carrying her own television drama, and while she does not look much like Ruby Rose, she would look incredible as Batwoman.

3. Halsey

Halsey is incredibly name brand, a proud member of the LGBT community, and much like Ruby Rose, she has plenty of tattoos to show off. However, her casting is extremely unlikely, as she is one of the most popular artists in the world right now. If she were to take the role, it would be an amazing opportunity to give her more acting experience and improve the ratings of Batwoman.

4. Emily Hampshire

Emily Hampshire might be recognized by the comedy aficionado as Stevie Budd in Schitt’s Creek, and by the science fiction junkie as Jennifer Goines in 12 Monkeys. While she is a few years older than Rose, she has plenty of experience playing main characters, and could easily use this opportunity to become a name brand actress. Hampshire is pansexual, which is hardly ever represented on television, and could accurately portray Kate Kane as well as anyone else.

5. Evan Rachel Wood

Evan Rachel Wood is certainly a big name actress right now, starring in Westworld, which is perhaps the most critically acclaimed show currently on the air. This may rule her out for appearing on a basic network such as the CW, but that doesn’t deter from the fact that she would be an incredible replacement. She has the look for the character, she’s bisexual, she has a list of credentials that are a mile long, and if she doesn’t replace Ruby Rose, then here’s hoping that she brings the character to life in a movie.

6. Katherine Moennig

Katherine Moennig is openly gay, she has a similar look to Rose, and she has a long list of starring roles. However, she is the oldest actress on this list, and she would almost certainly need to cut her hair for Kate Kane. If Moennig would be willing to make this change (which she has not for other shows), then that would rapidly increase her chances of landing the project, and she would be a suitable replacement for Batwoman.

7. Kristen Stewart

Kristen Stewart is the overall best choice to play Batwoman, whether it be on TV or in a movie. She would be sure to do the character more justice than Ruby Rose did, she has the same kind of mysterious, tattooed look that Rose has, and she has plenty of experience with action movies in her back pocket. The hope here is that Stewart will take over the character despite her status as a movie star in order to keep a lesbian superhero on prime time television, and while that seems unlikely, anything can happen.
