Good news for all you Terminator fans who enjoyed Genisys and its new story set in the Terminator universe. Terminator Genisys was both a success and a disappointment at the box office, with the domestic take being 90 million, the international box office was able to push the film to a very acceptable 440 million total take.
Speaking at a conference hosted by the Wrap, Skydance Media Chief Creative Officer Dana Goldberd had this to say about the future of the franchise including Terminator 6 .
“I wouldn’t say on hold, so much as re-adjusting”
This is good news for both those who loved and those who hated the new installment, it means that the studio realizes it made a mistake in some areas and is planning on making changes for Terminator 6 . Goldberg went on to say
“Happily, we live in the world where the domestic number had a level of importance 10 or 15 years ago — I’m not saying it’s not important, it is — but we have to play to a worldwide market. In terms of Terminator, the worldwide market paid attention, but we’re not taking the domestic number lightly.”
The importance of the international box office has been growing in recent years but it has never shown forth as brightly as with Terminator Genisys, Genisys was the first western film to ever gross more than 400 million while at the same time not grossing 100 million in north America. It was for this reason that I branded Terminator Genisys in a previous article, as one of the most important films of 2015. Terminator Genisys had a rough time at the North American box office, it is almost a certainty that had Jurassic World acted like any other blockbuster then Terminator Genisys would have crossed the 100 million mark, but like the first Avengers film in 2012, Jurassic World simply sucked the box office dry.
It is good news that Skydance is dedicated to the Terminator Franchise, and it seems safe to bet that Terminator 6 is on its way, abet in a different form then what was expected. Goldberg ended her statement with the following quote
““[We will use] data and research to do a worldwide study and really talk to audiences about what they loved, and what maybe didn’t work for them, so that the next we take with the franchise is the right one.”
So it seems that Terminator 6 is on its way but will be changing before it hits theaters, the future is fluid it seems just as the Terminator films themselves have always taught.
