Blood and Treasure [Finale]: An Under The Lens TV Review

Under the lens takes a deep look at films by focusing in on one or two particular areas of the picture that helped to define it for better or for worse. Spoilers will be included in this review.

This review is for the season 1 finale

Blood & Treasure is a new summer television show by CBS, a throwback program it seeks to capture the magic of such pictures as Romancing the StoneIndiana JonesCasablanca, and other archaeological themed content. The show is framed as an adventure thriller with comedic elements, the basic storyline follows the characters of Lexi Vaziri a master thief and her on again off again lover Danny McNamara, who is a former FBI agent. They are hot on the trail of Karim Farouk, a ruthless terrorist who is selling black market artifacts to fund terrorism. As the plot unfolds we find out that Farouk is seeking to reunite the sarcophagus of Anthony and Cleopatra (For an unknown reason, however, a “Curse” is mentioned) that was stolen by the Nazi’s in the last days of WWII.

Under The Lens: Twist and Ending

Twist: Everyone loves a good twist, it’s even better when the twist comes out of nowhere and leaves you shocked and wondering how they hid that from you for the whole story. The final episode of Blood and Treasure turned the tables on the viewer as it revealed the final villain, was not really the main bad guy, and that Karim Farouk thought dead. Was in fact still alive and had been the beloved character Simon Hardwick all along! It was a great twist and one nobody saw coming.

Ending:  Blood and Treasure is at its core a mystery thriller, and due to that it is very serialized leading from one episode to the next. Many TV programs end the first season on a massive cliffhanger. Couple this with the temptation to drag out the first season’s storyline and serialized storytelling can get tiresome and bogged down. Blood and Treasure had the good sense to end its first season with pretty much all its storylines wrapped up, there were very few threads left by the time the credits rolled. I found this refreshing, the season functions as a 12-hour movie basically, and while I am very excited for the new season, I like that the writers will be starting with a fresh slate.

Highlights

The Karim Farouk was really Simon Hardwick twist was wonderfully done.

The final episode had good pacing and was nither to long or too rushed.

The fight scenes were exciting and well shot

Something to think about

Were you hoping for a more supernatural ending to the season as the earlier episodes hinted at or were you happy with how the finale ended?

Conclusion

Overall Blood and Treasure was a fun and breezy summer TV show, and the finale delivered by answering all the questions and mysteries it had developed. The episode closed off the current story but left just enough to leave viewers asking for more.
