Eastern Rim: A Southeast Texas Con with a Conscience

Some sci-fi or comic cons sometimes have a side charity or booth or two supporting a cause, but the Eastern Rim Comic Con to be held in Baytown TX, on April 13th and !4th is actually based around helping the Promise Center, a 501(c)3 non-profit community organization that provides services for Baytown, Texas and the surrounding community, such as after-school tutoring, youth leadership camps, science camps, health fairs, community awareness meetings, poetry nights, multiple genre music concerts, indie film presentations coupled with the filmmakers discussing their movies, and symposiums on the pop and comic book culture, to name a few

To give a better idea of some of the thought behind the con, Mr. Jerry Shafer , one of the con founders had this to share:

“Because attending a comicon tends to be so cost prohibitive, we wanted to provide a no-cost/low-cost Comic Book Convention experience so that families can have Con fun without the exorbitant Con price tag.  Therefore, we created one of our own, where entrance and parking are free. It is called The Eastern Rim Funny Book & Vintage Con. Eastern Rim will have a full con compliment with vendors, cosplayers and a cash prize cosplay contest, artists, special guests, and panel discussions on a wide variety of topics related to comic book culture.  Our vendors will be very diverse. We will have authors, artists, toy and hobby vendors, comic book vendors, record vendors, vintage item vendors, POP! vendors, perler bead vendors, T-Shirt vendors, jewelry vendors, craft vendors, as well as Facebook Nerd and Geek communities representing the broader culture.”

Several local and nationally published comic book writers will be at the show during the weekend. Rags Morales (Batman, Thunderbolts),Doug Hazelwood (Superman, Flash), Davy Jones (Charmy’s Army), and local Houston artist, Adrian Nelson will be on hand for the show.
