The Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.2 Easter Egg You May Have Missed!

Warning: The following article contains potential spoilers for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.2 and Avengers: Infinity War

If you’re like the majority of moviegoers then you probably have already seen Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.2. It was a spectacular movie that everyone should see and appears to quite a big topic of discussion at the moment. And while most people are focused on dissecting typical aspects of Guardians 2, there’s something that not many people paid close attention to in the movie.

Post-Credits Scene In Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Teases Adam Warlock

In one of the post-credits scene, the sequence opens up to a disheveled Ayesha. She’s talking to one of her subordinates about their latest experiment, calling it the next step in their people’s evolution. When the camera pans up from Ayesha, we see the experiment she’s referring to but it’s inside of some kind of container, which looks awfully like a cocoon waiting to hatch. Nothing else is shown during the scene but it closes out with Ayesha naming her experiment “Adam”. For those of you don’t not know why the name “Adam” is important, it’s because Ayesha named her experiment after the Marvel Comics’ character Adam Warlock.

The director of Guardians 2, James Gunn confirmed that the aforementioned scene was teasing Warlock but the MCU version of Adam Warlock won’t make an appearance until Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.3. That said, Warlock’s cocoon is much more important to analyze than Warlock himself. While there was only a brief glimpse of the cocoon, it was long enough to determine a few details about it. For one, the cocoon definitely shares structural similarities to Warlock’s cocoon in the comics. And two, there was a mysterious glowing light at the top.

The glowing light might not have stuck out to most of you but if it is what one Marvel fan predicted, it could be the last Infinity Stone: the Soul Stone. Aside from the radiating light at the top of Warlock’s cocoon giving us the impression that it is in fact the Soul Stone, Warlock’s comic origins provide us with the evidence to suggest as much.

Warlock’s Comic Origins Have Already Depicted Him With The Soul Stone In His Possession

In the comics, Warlock retreats into his cocoon after being brutally beaten by Thor for trying to kidnap Lady Sif. Warlock’s cocoon is later found by the High Evolutionary who decides to keep the cocoon safe until Warlock emerges. But the High Evolutionary does something else of intrigue upon finding it. He embeds the Soul Stone at the head of Warlock’s cocoon, imbuing Warlock with all the abilities of said stone.

Taking into account that aspect of Warlock’s comic origins, along with the recent tease of his character in Guardians 2, it’s safe to say the Soul Stone is sitting atop Warlock’s cocoon. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that the glowing light at the top of Warlock’s cocoon shines with a radiating glow, identical to how the Infinity Stones are depicted in the MCU. So, there’s quite a bit of evidence towards the Adam Warlock tease in Guardians 2 being a tease for the Soul Stone as well—even though many fans are guessing the Soul Stone will appear in Thor: Ragnarok, without any evidence to say so.

More to the point, some fans will argue that the glowing light in Warlock’s cocoon can’t be the Soul Stone since Warlock won’t appear until after Avengers: Infinity War. But does the MCU actually need Warlock to use the Soul Stone? The simple answer is no.

The Soul Stone Can Be Introduced Without Adam Warlock

Without speculating too much, the Soul Stone could easily be removed from Warlock’s cocoon before he emerges from it. So there’s no real necessity to have Warlock present in order to utilize the stone in the MCU. Though, if he did, the MCU version would be quite a bit more loyal to Warlock’s comic origins. I personally hope the MCU version of Warlock is a direct interpretation of the comics so we can see him take on Thanos.

In case you didn’t know, Warlock loses in his first encounter with Thanos but it would make for an entertaining fight in the MCU. Nevertheless, this small tease of the Soul Stone is one fans will be looking over again and again, until James Gunn addresses the matter.
