Magnum P.I: Farewell to Love: An Under The Lens Review

Under the lens takes a deep look at films by focusing in on one or two particular areas of the picture that helped to define it for better or for worse. Spoilers will be included in this review.

Magnum P.I is an action-adventure mystery television show that airs on CBS and stars Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Amy Hill, and Tim Kang. The season 2, 16th episode finds Magnum and Higgins undercover as a couple on a romantic bus tour when one of the love birds on the trip is murdered and they both must find the killer before its too late.

Under The Lens: Chemistry, Emotional Moments

Chemistry: No matter how one feels about this reboot, there is no denying the incredible chemistry shared by Jay Hernandez and Perdita Weeks, as partners on the show their relationship crackles with sharp dialogue and playful interactions (Also the will they won’t they sexual tension between Magnum and Higgins). This chemistry is on display in this episode as we see them go undercover to spy on a cheating couple who have gone on a “Love Bus” tour of the island. It’s funny seeing them play a couple, playfully ribbing each other and seeing how uncomfortable Higgins is, and how much fun Magnum is having.

Emotional Moments: This episode gave T.C a very unexpected storyline seeing him reconnect with an old girlfriend, he meets with her while she is on her honeymoon, and they find they both have feelings for each other still. We hear how T.C and her drifted apart after he returned from being a POW, the episode follows T.C as he is conflicted about if he should get back together with her even if she is married. In the end, we get a very tender and heartbreaking moment as she tells him she is leaving her husband, T.C tearfully convinces her not to, saying “He is not that guy” who would break up a happy union. Its very sad but reinforces what a good guy T.C really is.

Highlights

As always the island scenery is beautiful.

We got some good humor on the love tour as Magnum and Higgins try and fit in.

We learn more about T.C’s background which up till now has not been overly talked about.

Quotable Quote

T.C: Please, please tell me he is a bad guy? That he is bad tempered, or does not love his momma? Something!

Something to think about

What would you do if an old flame reconnected with you and you both had feelings for each other, but one of you was married or in a relationship?

Conclusion

Overall Magnum P.I: Farewell to Love is another solid episode in the second season of the show, it delved more into T.C’s background and set him up for a future love interest, and we also got to see more of the sexual tension develop between Magnum and Higgins. An exciting foot chase and shootout also provided some action for the climax, this episode pushed the show forward not so much in the overall narrative but in character plot progression.
