Niantic has just released a much a awaited update for the Pokemon Go app.
This update is an attempt to throw some bandages on their broken tracking system. Many players were angered by the decision to remove the, sometimes faulty, 3-step tracking from the game. To add fuel to the fire, the team at Niantic decided to shut down a number of third party apps and websites designed to simplify some confusing aspects of the game. The site Pokevision.com, which helps players track pokemon spawns was the first to be shut down. A number of IV calculators such as Pokeadvisor.com were also shut down in the week before this update. Many people were angered by this control of information, while others believed it was a sign that these features would soon be introduced to the app.
The 8/8/2016 update (version 0.33 Android/1.33 iPhone) has delivered a number of changes and fixes that players can be happy about.
1 – Updated Tracking
The biggest addition is revamped tracking system, leading many to call this the “grass update” or “tracking update”. Pokemon Go has been fitted with a new “sightings” system that can help players identify nearby Pokemon. Through sightings, nearby pokemon come with a marker signaling the pokestop closest to its spawn location. Many have wondered if this is the intended tracking feature, or if further tracking updates are in store.
It should be noted that a number of users have had issues with the new tracking feature. Players in some areas are reporting that every pokemon in the area is showing up in the grass, without a pokestop identifier. The tracking system will be of no use to these players until this is fixed.
2 – Throw Rewards
Players are rejoicing over the reintroduction of throw bonuses. In the week prior to the update, bonuses for throws landing in the inner circle were not granting additional exp. The extra exp (+50 exp for a great throw) was a huge help to gaining player levels. Once again skilled throws will come with a reward.
3 – Battery Saver
One of the most puzzling things about recent patches was the disappearance of “battery saver mode.” Pokemon Go is an epic drain on battery life, requiring users to walk around with the app open at all times to hatch eggs and catch pokemon. Many were forced to purchase power packs when this option disappeared from the settings. Thankfully the option, which will dim the screen when the device is in your pocket, has been reintroduced.
4 – Safety Warnings
After updating trainers were greeted with new messages reminding them to play responsibly. For example new log-in messages warn players against trespassing and playing while driving. The app also sends you warning if it detects that you are driving above a certain speed. Players will need to confirm that they are a passenger before they are allowed to continue playing.
