During the Houston Writers Guild Authorpalooza that took place on the weekend of October 6th, 7th, and 8th, 2023. A panel was held about writing for radio.
The panel host was Patrick J. Fant, a Houston media legend who founded such ground-breaking Houston, TX stations as 101 KLOL, 94.1 The Buzz, and 104 KRBE. He also put together the third rock radio station for NASA so astronauts can actually educate about space and play classic rock and other types of music for brand new audiences.
As he has been associated with and part of the radio industry for so many years Mr. Fant gave a panel introducing writing for radio in different areas and types of that writing, as well as several samples of his own work with a character he calls Uncle Otis and using this character as a way to get in the market of conservative talk radio.
Some of the concepts presented in his panel were using audio as a way to write a picture Within someone’s head using good writing, voice acting, and effects that could create drama, and information, and be used as a way to advertise in a medium they could reach any number of listeners.
One tip he emphasized for those looking to write for radio in advertising or content was to keep a notebook and observe the world around you for ideas.
He presented ideas such as the concept of decorating with words and shared samples of audio tracks that demonstrated just that. it showed how brand loyalty and adoption have been shown to be 70% emotional and most of it is driven by audio.
Pat Fant Is also one of the innovators behind RFC media including such dynamic media concepts as Tune-In radio.
