Sequel And Commander : The Far Side of Hollywood

This past November, Russell Crowe tweeted about the possibility of a sequel to his 2003, epic period war drama, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. The movie was both a critical and financial success and would be a welcome come back for all concerned.

The movie is based on a series of books by author, Patrick O’Brien. In this series, Mr. O’Brien  tells the tale of  Jack Aubrey and his rise from a nine-year-old member of a ship’s company in the British Royal Navy. From the late 1700’s to the early 1800’s Aubrey rises through the ranks, even enduring some setbacks in rank, to become Rear-Admiral of the Royal Navy. He is besieged at times by his own arrogance and rebellious streak at times, and with a jealous father, also a ranking naval officer, causing problems for him politically.

Throughout the novels, Aubrey is shown as having interests in mathematics and astronomy, which aid him greatly in his endeavors.  He is a more cerebral character, rather than the usual military movie lead.

The first film was successful not only at the box office and critical circles but won several Academy Awards. There is a worldwide interest in the movie, and book series and Mr. Crowe’s tweet did not fall on dead cell spots.

Indeed, his tweet has stirred up everyone from Screen Crush to Den of Geek, and everyone in between. Although tweeted a few months ago, there is still a quiet buzz for the sequel to be produced and for Mr. Crowe to still be involved.

So far as it is known, early talks and proposals are being bandied about in Hollywood, however, no definite plans are set as yet, However, with the deluge of superhero, sci-fi, and horror, seeming to be the norm for the celluloid connoisseur,  Master and Commander, would be a welcome change of seas for a becalmed movie industry.
