She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Series Premiere: An Under The Lens Review

Under the lens is a review series for the busy working professional, they take a deep look at films by focusing in on one or two particular areas of the picture that helped to define it for better or for worse.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is a 2022 superhero television show that exists in the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe. Created by Jessica Gao and starring Mark Ruffalo and Tatiana Maslany. The story follows Jennifer Walters (cousin of Bruce Banner) as she navigates the complicated life of a single, 30-something attorney who also happens to be a green 6-foot-7-inch superpowered Hulk.

UNDER THE LENS: Humor

Humor: More and more of late the MCU has been injecting humor into its stories, which in and of itself is not an issue if the humor is in fact funny and good. Sadly She-Hulk continues the trend of the MCU hamfisting in unfunny humor and one-liners, now I realize that She-Hulk has been funny and 4th wall breaking in the comics, and as I said before comedy and humor in the MCU is not a bad thing. However one would think that with comedy being such a mainstay of the MCU, they would hire come comedians to write some of the jokes because the humor in She-Hulk is so unfunny at times that I found myself cringing.

Nowhere was this more evident than in the after-credit scene where we find out how Steve Rogers lost his V-card, after a rambling monologue about how amazing his ass was, and how sad it was that he never slept with anyone, Hulk reveals he did in fact, back in 1943. Jennifer Walters then yells in what I guess was supposed to be a hilarious moment “Captain America Fuuuuu” (the scene cuts off before the word). I was left staring at the screen asking myself “Was that supposed to be funny?”

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The training scenes were fun
  • The CGI was vastly improved from the trailer
  • Hulk and Jennifer have good chemistry together

Bruce Banner: Spandex is your best friend

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

Do you sometimes feel like who you are inside is different than who you are in your career? Does that frustrate you? How do you handle it?

CONCLUSION

Overall She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is a mixed bag, as it showcases the MCU at its best and absolute worst, with poor CGI and cringe-worthy humor the show is clearly showing cracks in the MCU as a whole. However, its worldbuilding and wacky feel also present us with a wonderfully colorful world the MCU had created to play in. Tatiana Maslany embodies Jennifer Walters well and Bruce feels more Hulk-like than we last saw him in Endgame, sadly the show’s terrible script and poor CGI drag down what could have been a harmless and fun outing into the Marvel universe.
