SummerSlam!
This weekend is WWE’s biggest party of the summer. SummerSlam is bringing the big guns with some huge matches set for the four-hour show. But with a card this size it is easy to get lost, so we’re here to keep you right and give you the full match card for this Sunday, along with our predictions for every match.
Akira Tozawa vs Neville
Neville lost his Cruiserweight title on Monday night Raw this week after holding it for half a year. This was a huge shock to the system for many fans. Those fans may turn out to be happier on Sunday though, as Neville has invoked his rematch clause against Tozawa. The Cruiserweight Championship match will take place on the SummerSlam pre-show. We’re expecting Tozawa to be able to hold onto the title since he has only just won it. In addition, WWE may well have other plans for Neville on the main roster and away from 205 Live.
Prediction: Akira Tozawa Retains The Cruiserweight Championship.
The New Day vs The Usos
Another case where the Usos are getting a rematch for the Smackdown Live Tag Team Championships after the New Day beat them for the titles at Battleground. These teams have put on great matches so far in this feud, and this set-up towards a final encounter should make for a great showdown, even though the match has also been moved to the SummerSlam pre-show. However, we would be surprised again if the Usos managed to regain their titles, and we think the New Day has this one in the bag.
Prediction: The New Day Retain The Smackdown Tag Team Championships.
The Big Show vs Big Cass
While these two giants have sparred back and forth for the last several weeks. This bout will be different as the former best friend of Big Cass, Enzo Amore, will hang above the ring in a shark cage. WWE has enjoyed adding quirks like this to matches recently, and I believe that Big Cass will down the world’s largest athlete either through a fair fight or Enzo betraying the Big Show and rejoining Cass to reform their team.
Prediction: Big Cass Wins.
Randy Orton vs Rusev
These two heavyweights have recent losses to their names. Both are hoping for a major victory at SummerSlam to get them back on track. It is a huge match as these two men are both major stars and I do not believe they’ve ever faced off before. Certainly not on a stage as big as SummerSlam. I think this time around it’ll be Rusev who gets the win. Mostly because he will be greatly infuriated after his recent loss to John Cena and the RKO hit at his expense by Randy Orton on Smackdown this week.
Prediction: Rusev Wins.
Sheamus and Cesaro vs Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins
Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins have finally gotten back together. Now they’ve decided, or Kurt Angle decided for them, that they will go after the Raw Tag Team Championships held by Sheamus and Cesaro. Those two have had a solid reign, but the combination of Ambrose and Rollins is one that, in my opinion, will take them down and steal their titles at SummerSlam. They’re two of the biggest stars in WWE and together they’re unlikely to fail on a stage like this.
Prediction: Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins Win The Raw Tag Team Championships.
John Cena vs Baron Corbin
This match has been elevated because John Cena is now the reason that Baron Corbin lost out on his chance to cash-in his money in the bank contract. That’s a huge opportunity lost for Corbin and embarrasses him greatly, so I imagine his rage will carry him so far as to be able to at least defeat John Cena this Sunday at SummerSlam. He’s lost credibility within WWE for failing to cash-in and win the WWE Championship, so he needs this win far more than Cena does.
Prediction: Baron Corbin Wins.
“Demon” Finn Balor vs Bray Wyatt
This week on Raw, Finn Balor failed to defeat Bray Wyatt and Wyatt enraged him to the point where he decided that this Sunday in a rematch he would unleash his alter ego, the Demon King. We haven’t seen this face of Balor since last year’s SummerSlam event within the WWE, so we expect that it will carry him to a victory as it did last year against Seth Rollins. If he releases the Demon and still fails, it would feel greatly unsatisfying. The Demon will bring down the Eater of Worlds at SummerSlam.
Prediction: Finn Balor Wins.
Naomi vs Natalya
Naomi has been Smackdown Women’s Champion since WrestleMania in April, and it hasn’t been the best reign. However, this match with the very talented Natalya has great potential, and with Carmella and her money in the bank briefcase lurking in the background, there are three women that could walk out of SummerSlam with the belt. In my opinion though, I think we will see Natalya take the title and walk out still holding it.
Prediction: Natalya Wins The Smackdown Women’s Championship.
Alexa Bliss vs Sasha Banks
As for the Raw Women’s Championship, Sasha Banks was unsuccessful in taking it off of Alexa Bliss at Great Balls of Fire, but now she has gained herself another opportunity and I think she may just win this time. Alexa Bliss has had a good run as champion, but I think it may be time to give Banks a proper run with the title.
Prediction: Sasha Banks Wins The Raw Women’s Championship.
AJ Styles vs Kevin Owens
This United States Championship match has the added interest that Shane McMahon is the special guest referee. A fact which is sure to play into the match itself somehow. Also, these two are incredibly talented, and their matches have seemed to hold something back. This final encounter could potentially be the best of all. These two together could make a match that is not only match of the night, but possibly match of the year.
Prediction: AJ Styles Retains The United States Championship.
Jinder Mahal vs Shinsuke Nakamura
The WWE Championship didn’t have the greatest match at SummerSlam last year. It failed to deliver a little bit. It may do so again this time as Jinder Mahal hasn’t had a good match in his run as champion yet. Shinsuke Nakamura is a big favourite to win his first WWE Championship on Sunday. However I think that Mahal may yet manage to hold onto that title a little while longer somehow. He’ll probably do so with further help from the Singh Brothers.
Prediction: Jinder Mahal Retains The WWE Championship.
Brock Lesnar vs Samoa Joe vs Braun Strowman vs Roman Reigns
The major main event for the evening will be the fatal four way for the Universal Championship. The match features these huge superstars vying for Raw’s major prize. While all four of these men are perfectly capable of walking out of Sunday with the title, I believe somehow that Samoa Joe may manage the feat. The Samoan Submission Machine may finally get a victory over Brock Lesnar that he well deserves. This would leave Roman Reigns waiting for his turn to hold the belt a little longer. A victory in this match could make Joe though, so I’m rooting for him.
Prediction: Samoa Joe Wins The Universal Championship.
