The Good, The Bad And The Ugly of Freelance Journalism

As a freelancer or someone who makes specialized working for one small press site you some kind of had the opportunity cover trade shows especially conventions or cons that might be something in your realm of expertise. Cover your trade show can be a fantastic experience for the small print journalist. where do you run a podcast of log, print base articles, or combination of all the above, sometimes you find out anything can happen when you attend a show.

The good

The good is a small show that might be free to attend, and you have the opportunity, as long as you cleared it with the event staff, to actually to pick and choose your own stories. You get to look for potential interviews or articles From perspective. Also, it’s common long as smaller shows I have the best press coverage or if you’re experienced press person you could actually do the whole ground work. You get to actually search out and decide your stories. Where there be Cherry groups that are attending, or occasionally again speak to performers that may not get to go to any other venue, this can be an opportunity for you to Define your story. Also on the really good scale is going to a show on a regular basis we have a relationship with a media and public relations people there and you get to do this really good stories you either get interviews articles ahead of time with celebrities artist for the show, or at the show itself you get to conduct some video or print type interviews for publication for your site. but remember if you are working a show and you would like to continue 10 that show make sure if you get the opportunity for promotional articles or podcast before that show to get it done.  having the opportunity to attend one of these shows and being treated as actual press, which some Outlets have a hard time doing because you are small press person, show the proper respect those who what you come there send the links or info early enough that can promote their show with it This creates Goodwill will those folks that give you the opportunity to attend Elsa build reputation is reliable press person so you have the opportunity to attend on a regular basis and Wellbutrin application as time goes on in the industry.

The bad

Sometimes you  sometimes you may attend a show that you worked with for years, and find out later on things have changed and not for the better. Sometimes I show that was normally friendly towards press, has now become sort of indifferent. or do it to a change in management  formerly established policies the new while attending the show before has changed due to management changes. Also, you might find that was one time was a pretty stable show it has become kind of tumultuous and chaotic and dealing with them.

And these kinds of situations Here are a few ideas that may help you out dealing with this happens at a show you regularly attend :

the first example, if you regularly attend look at dinner interview with one of these folks. Although they might not be the big time celebrity or fan favorite person you would like to talk to, your units potion people in the industry that may not get anywhere else. Also sitting up her current relationship with some of these folks can help you in the future as far as stories for your site or blog.

Secondly, check the photo and video policies that you might have. for example, you may go to a show such as an Electronics or Industry Show of some kind and they have prohibitions against photography for copper act patent or trademark reasons. Also, some, or sci-fi shows might have areas where they limit for photography or video. on the ground so to speak and give yourself an in with the percolation people for these shows. Also as management change for the shows, there may be times where are these policies change  You may not have the easiest time to share your work to promote the show you’re attending or want to attend so it’s a good idea to try to work with folks as politely as calmly as possible.

and also don’t forget You’re a guest at that show and if you’re just starting out as press don’t always expect the Great interviews to start off with. Some fresh elections folks are looking to see what kind of work you’re going to do before they give you big interviews. also, understand it was three-day show and policies have changed you may only got to attend one or two days depending on the way they handle press be glad for the day so that way even though it’s a bad situation you can keep your standing with the folks to put this show on.

The ugly

Now fellow press person or otherwise interested party, what say you do everything you’re supposed to. You do the promotional articles, if all all the parameters given to you, and you even promote the person putting the show on an article for this person sets himself up as someone that cares about the fans, the small press, and those attending.

But, you find that the person you had extreme respect for and worked nights and  and weekends, maybe even sacrifice and lunch breaks on your regular job, and time with your family, to meet deadlines for this person, you find out there actually a chaotic, dictatorial, jerk. and all the good work you did promote this show ensure that everyone knew you’re basically used and treated like garbage once you got there. The sad thing is is sometimes a public relations or media person that you actually interface with may not have a clue about how this person is at the shows they run. So, don’t hold it against them if there’s someone you work with for several years especially There’s no reason to hold it against him or be angry with him because quite frankly, they’re probably just as duke As You Are. sometimes people will change policies and rules for press at the show is happening they’ll have no set guidelines or instructions what you can and can’t do at the show. On the flip side of this you may attend a show but doesn’t have the steadiest footing and once you get there you might find that yes I’m able to get several interviews, however, you’re not sure and feel effect anyone’s standing or be allowed to talk some of these folks, so it because a person runs the show although friendly, is very confused and likes to micromanage. problem with these kind of shows is overtime they tend to fall apart and this is where having your facts together and keeping things straight is very important for the small press person, because you have her check your reputation.  Unfortunately shows that are ran like this tend to fall apart after a few years even though they may be very faint friendly and press friendly it can become a kick in the teeth is something you rely on going to a regular basis.

Remember, being a small press person can be a great way to sharpen your skills meet new people, and experience a world not everybody gets to attend, going to a trade show you something that excites you some of that you really enjoy is a great way to capitalize on a hobby or skills that you already have. But,  know this for all the joys and Trump’s experience in this job you can also get a kick in the teeth keep good communication between you and your editor, or if you’re running the Blog, podcast, or site you have a good support system with your staff and with those around you. Although you might be super Pershing freelancer, don’t try to always go to loan you finally gets harder to keep doing that.
