Unlike the rest of the world, I only just recently saw Thor: Ragnarok, and I had mixed feelings on the film. I thought that it was one of the best MCU films to date, but there are just a few issues that I had with the overall execution of the film. Breaking the whole movie down will show that there are many more good aspects in the film than bad, and I hope you enjoy my unique opinion on the film.
How Many Jokes Are Too Many?
From the very start of the film, it was clear that this was going to be one of the funniest Marvel movies to date. However, I felt that some of the jokes seemed forced. For instance, Thor spinning around while talking to Surtur didn’t even get a giggle out of me, because the film had just started and it felt like such an inorganic idea. I loved all of the scenes where you could tell that the actors themselves improvised the dialogue, and used their chemistry together to create jokes that were just spur of the moment ideas, but that lighthearted atmosphere throughout the whole movie really diminished how sinister the villains turned out to be. Surtur ended up destroying all of Asgard, and I still couldn’t take him seriously as he was striking down an entire realm. As far as Hela goes, that’s a different problem altogether.
Who the Hell is Hela?
Hela was supposed to be the biggest bad out of all of the Thor movies, but what did she really do? She destroyed Thor’s hammer, cool, that really set him back for a while. Aside from that, she kills the Warrior’s Three just because no one wanted to write them into the story anymore, takes over Asgard in a single scene, and slashes Thor’s eye out in an attempt to change the character for Infinity War. She was a plot device that just popped up out of nowhere, and is right up there with Whiplash and Mandarin as far as the worst MCU villains go.
Korg is My Spirit Animal
Korg is quite possibly the best character I have seen in any superhero film, and is the sole reason I think Taika Waititi is a genius. He’s a character that is hilarious every time he’s on screen, he’s the type of friend that everyone seeks to have in their life, and it is impossible for anyone to not love him to pieces. I want to see Korg in Infinity Wars. I want to see Korg kill Thanos. I want Korg to get his own spinoff movie. Korg: Revolution anybody? The Adventures of Korg and Mink? Whatever his capacity will be in future films, I hope we see him again, and I hope he keeps livening up more and more Marvel movies.
Thor 2.0
Thor without his beloved Mjolner would be a broken man, right? Apparently not. Thor being able to use his lightning without his hammer makes him so much more of a badass, and the new look he obtained in this film doesn’t hurt either. We already saw him being able to trade even punches with the Hulk without the help of a mystical weapon, and that should make him even more dangerous for all of the foes to come.
