Unknown: An Under The Lens Review

Under the lens takes a deep look at films by focusing in on one or two particular areas of the picture that helped to define it for better or for worse. Spoilers will be included in this review.

Unknown Is a mystery thriller directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and stars Liam Neeson, January Jones, and Diane Kruger. It follows the tale of Martin Harris who awakens from a coma, only to discover that someone has taken on his identity and that no one, (not even his wife), believes him. With the help of a young woman, he sets out to prove who he is. While dark forces seek to stop him at all costs.

Under The Lens: Edits & action

Edits: Unknown is a product of the ’00s in regards to action pictures who relied upon quick cits within the edit to heighten tension and make the scenes feel frantic. This is generally disliked nowadays, however, Unknown did a rather good job pacing its cuts and placing them in areas that DID add tension. The car chase near the midpoint of the picture was well shot and very tense, with many cuts that made the scene feel rushed and frantic in a good way.

Action: Director Jaume Collet-Serra and Neeson frequently collaborate, and have so far made four pictures together. Generally, the results have been good, however, Unknown suffers from some pretty generic action choreography, Harris who is supposed to be a trained assassin has poor fights and the final fight between him and his fellow assassin is lackluster at best.
