Will ‘Black Panther’ Exceed Its $120M Projected Opening Weekend?

In the next couple of weeks, we will finally be introduced to the next chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ever since T’Challa’s monumental first appearance in Captain America: Civil War nearly two years ago, fans have been looking forward to seeing Black Panther in his solo film. With the trailers and unique marketing campaign, Marvel Studios succeeded in hyping up their audience.

How Will ‘Black Panther’ Perform Opening Weekend At The Box Office?

Comicbook.com is reporting that the film is projected to open with $120 million at the least. That’s an incredible number considering how the film will focus on a Marvel character that the general public doesn’t know that much about. The only other superhero flick to release in February was Deadpool in 2016 – opening with an impressive $132 million. Not only is Black Panther projected to make quite a bit of money opening weekend, the film has already passed Captian America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming in pre-ticket sells.

Although $120 million is an impressive number for Black Panther, it may even open with more than that. Originally, sources said the film was projected to make less than $100 million. Since the beginning of the marketing campaign, the projected numbers have increased exponentially. Considering that there is no other competition in February makes this film the main blockbuster that month. Featuring a nearly all-black cast, being the first for the MCU, this is one of the main reasons Black Panther may open up with $145 million at the least.

One of the reasons Black Panther could surpass $120 million is that it targets a prominently black demographic. Putting Chadwick Boseman front and center as an African-American superhero plays a pivotal role in the African-American community. Considering what’s riding on this film, it has the potential to be revolutionary.
