Why The Fast and Furious Films Should Reboot in Space

The Fast and Furious franchise is one of the most successful franchises in recent memory. Domestic box office recipes are totaling 1.2 billion with a worldwide tally of 3.8 billion and Episode 8 is expected to cross the billion thresholds once again. The Fast and the Furious series has been greenlite for two more films with a grand finale planned for the tenth film. Now, the future of the Fast and Furious series is mapped out till at least 2020 or 2021, yet even so there is already talk of a reboot of the series planned for some time after the concluding chapter of the iconic franchise. It may seen crazy to be talking about a reboot already, yet it is silly to think that the studio will leave such a valuable franchise on the back burner for long.

One of the jokes has been that Dom’s crew has gone everywhere, so there is nowhere to go, thus the next step is to go to outer-space. Fast and Furious script writer Chris Morgan was even asked about this during an interview for UPROXX and said,

“I get, ‘Are you going to space?,’ and, ‘Please, God, tell me you’re not going to space because you’ll lose me if you do,’” He then added, “The only way I’d go to space is if I had something so good.”

It is indeed ridicules to think of taking the current crew into space for further adventures, that being said, the idea of Fast and Furious taking place in space is not something we should discount. This franchise is not unjustly likened to the Call of Duty video game series–a fun and flashy action story told for entertainment. Just as the Call of Duty series incorporated space into later titles, perhaps a total reboot of the Fast and Furious series which takes place in space is something that could be fun!

Imagine for a moment a Fast and Furious film set, in say the year 2200 or something, that takes place in the asteroid belt or just beyond mars and tells a story of space ship racing, heists and over the top action. It could be super entertaining! A futuristic Fast and Furious story would be able to transport a lot of the exciting car action and replace it with small space ships while keeping the story based around friends and family fighting evil forces trying to tear them apart.

Taking the series this route would allow for the studio to reboot without any ill will or accusations of telling the same story all over again. It would also allow for the series to retain its feel and themes just with a change of scenery. In many ways, Star Wars: Rogue One had a very similar feel to the Fast and Furious series, with its heist story, chase sequences and central story of family and legacy. So, take a moment and imagine a Fast and Furious movie in the Sci-Fi setting of Rogue One…. It’s actually kind of cool right?

So do you agree? Should the fast and furious films reboot in space?
