I Gave Captain Marvel a Chance and it Suprised ME!

The controversy surrounding the film Captain Marvel, the newest installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe reminds me of the chaos that ensued during the release and viewing of another Disney film, Beauty and the Beast, in which the director Bill Condon revealed on Social media that a beloved character was LGBTQ. The reveal caused an uproar not seen for many years, with some theaters refusing to show the film, in the end, it was all for nothing as the character is “Outted” and if you blink you will literally miss the scene. Before Captain Marvel was released into theaters things began to grow tense. Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie 80% while the audience review is at 59% after the opening weekend. Many of the reviews given were taken down because they were posted before the movie was even released. Those reviews discussed the trailer and how they thought Brie Larson looked “wooden” or “should smile more.”

Larson has been telling journalists that she wishes that press conferences would be more inclusive and racially oriented. She is also a big advocate for feminism saying that Captain Marvel is a movie that shows powerful women in different examples. While this was lauded by many, it also caused a major uproar as some viewed her comments as sexist towards men.

When I saw the movie I was expecting something crazy. I was expecting to have feminism shoved down my throat. I may be a woman, but I am not an extremist like other women around me. That being said, I can tell you that this movie was perfect for showing that women are powerful. Though it was not as good as Wonder Woman I am happy that Marvel jumped on and created a stand-alone female superhero movie.

Don’t listen to the media. Don’t trust most movie reviews. Go see this movie. Go for the movie, but stay for the after-credit scenes! Oh my gosh!
