Kingdom Hearts III Re:Mind Trailer Analysis

KINGDOM HEARTS III Re Mind DLC Trailer (E3 2019) (Closed Captions)

At this year’s E3, Square Enix pulled out all the stops. They had trailers for their Final Fantasy VII Remake and a Kingdom Hearts III DLC titled Kingdom Hearts III Re:Mind. I’m going to analyze the trailer to see what new content we will be getting. I will also look at our first glimpses of the story to see what the main plot will be.

Kingdom Hearts III Re:Mind: New Content

After a short, voiceless conversation, we see some of the gameplay. Most notably, we see three playable characters: Riku, Aqua, and Roxas. While all of these characters have been playable in other games, it will be exciting to see new playable content. Additionally, we see the Oathkeeper keyblade, and subsequently a new form for Sora.

While these features are not entirely new to us, we will be playing with the mechanics of the third game. This thought is extremely exciting to me as it means we will be getting the smooth movements with beloved player characters from the earlier decades of the series.

Kingdom Hearts III Re:Mind: New Story

Despite having no voice actors heard in the trailer, we do sort of see what the story will be about. It seems there will be two key things in the storyline. The first we see right at the beginning, and the second at the end.

First, we see Young Xehanort, speaking to who appears to be the Master of Masters. While it isn’t certain this is who he’s speaking to, the dialect and movements of the hooded character make me believe that’s who it is. They seem to be speaking of the coats that are so common to see amongst characters in the series, as well as the so-called ‘fated land’ in which the final battle on the main game takes place.

Secondly, we see Xigbar and Luxord speaking. They are likely in the meeting place we see during the course of the game, as the stone structures they stand on appear the same. Luxord asks who Xigbar is, and there is silence. He then continues and states he’ll continue playing the fool. Upon his leave, Xigbar states that the real question is who Luxord is.

These two plot points will likely play the largest roles in the DLC’s extended story, but it is still too soon to tell. Re:Mind has reportedly been set for a winter release, so we will likely see more leading into later months.
