It’s been speculated that Black Mask could be making his debut in the DCEU as the main villain of the upcoming film Gotham City Sirens, which would pit him against characters such as Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn. Going against such powerful Batman villains takes a special individual (such as Batman), meaning that a special actor would have to play the character. So, who could play one of the most sadistic villains that the DC Comics universe has ever known? I have a few ideas.
1. Leonardo DiCaprio
Perhaps suggesting DiCaprio as a villain that is not so widely known is blowing the casting process out of the water, but how perfect would he be? If you’ve seen The Wolf of Wall Street, you know that he nails it as a ruthless business man, and that’s basically what Black Mask is. Handing any role to an actor as excellent as Leo is a surefire way to create the next great character, and he could give that success to the character of Black Mask.
2. Jon Hamm
If you need any reasoning as to why Jon Hamm should play a villain Black Mask, just go binge a few episodes of Mad Men. Hamm has shown not only his acting prowess, but his uncanny ability to pretend to be an absolute scumbag all in one show. Still being in high demand among casting agents, yet not being on the same level of fame as say a Leonardo DiCaprio, it is much more likely that he is to be considered for the role.
3. Dougray Scott
The devious and calculating stepfather from Taken 3, Dougray Scott proved in just one role that he could be a worthy villain in any movie. He’s played the businessman type role almost exclusively in his work of late, and that’s exactly who Black Mask is. This character would just be another day at the ever so familiar office for Scott, which means that he could play the role to its full potential without breaking a sweat.
4. Johnny Depp
While Johnny Depp is used to being the star and hero of his own movies, there’s no denying that he can play a maniacal villain. Pretty much every kind of role you can imagine has been played by Depp, including villains that will be remembered for ages to come. Adding another villain of such to his repertoire of roles, Depp could get back onto his acting horse, and bring some much needed attention to this film project.
5. Benicio Del Toro
The other side of the coin from the likes of Johnny Depp, Del Toro has played top-notch villains throughout his entire career. Having already brought to life the supervillain The Collector in Guardians of the Galaxy just enhances Benicio’s stock for this role, and proves that he can in fact tackle a character who goes head to head with the likes of Batman. The dapper personality and villainous aura of this perennial star blends perfectly with that of Black Mask, and could make for the most comically accurate Dark Knight rogue to date.
6. Viggo Mortensen
A terrific method actor, and still beloved by all, Mortensen is seasoned in the art of playing a mobster. If you’ve ever seen the film Eastern Promises, you need look no further for any reason as to why Viggo can play a cool, collected mobster type of person. Given any character to portray onscreen, Mortensen will undoubtedly toss himself into the depths of his acting process, and give us a bone chilling villain that leaves the audience wanting more.
7. Ray Liotta
Possibly the king of the classic mob movies, no crime boss is complete without having the name Ray Liotta attached to him. Pioneering films such as Hollywood staple Goodfellas, Liotta made his career off of being an intimidating figure for everyone to enjoy on screen. Bringing larger than life characters out to their full potential is Ray Liotta’s forte, and I would expect Black Mask to be no different.
8. Kevin Spacey
The king of diverse, sadistic villains, Kevin Spacey is a formidable villain for any film project. Spacey has a type of political approach to all of his villainous roles, and that is what’s needed for someone like Black Mask. Familiar with the ruthlessness required for a profiteer and crooked businessman, Kevin Spacey can absolutely do the role of this coveted Batman villain justice.
9. Mark A. Sheppard
If you’ve ever seen an episode of Supernatural, you know that Mark Sheppard is absolutely wicked and notorious. While being an English actor, Sheppard’s American accent is impeccable (see his episodes of Doctor Who for reference), and there’s no one who is better at being a mobster than the King of Hell himself. A beloved actor by many people, Mark A. Sheppard could breathe life into perhaps the most calculating and charismatic Batman villain.
10. Vincent D’Onofrio
At long last, we get to the most unique choice of this entire list. Vincent D’Onofrio is perhaps the most beloved villain figure in all of pop culture, and has revolutionized the way people think of the bad guys with his role as The Kingpin in Daredevil. Given the role of Black Mask, D’Onofrio could undoubtedly give another memorable performance, and create a character the likes of which will be hated and loved by all.
What do you think? Who should play the role of the infamous Black Mask? Let me know in the comments!
