The Last Ship is a post-apocalyptic thriller television show, that follows the crew of a naval destroyer who are forced to confront the reality of a new existence when a pandemic kills off most of the earth’s population. Season 2 sees the crew facing not only a dangerous cult, but also the creator of the virus itself. The show stars Eric Dane and Adam Baldwin and was created by Steven Kane and Hank Steinberg.
UNDER THE LENS: VILLAINS
Pacing: The bulk of season two had comprised of a cat and mouse chase between the Nathan James and the “Ramsey” brothers (Brían F. O’Byrne & Nick Court) who lead the immunes, the chase and final showdown between the Ramseys and Captain Chandler (Eric Dane) is very well shot and extremely exciting. In the end, the Nathan James is victorious and sinks the immune submarine, the episode ends with the apparent death of the Ramsey brothers. One of the issues this season was how weak the Ramsey brothers were as bad guys, I never once felt they were a worldwide threat, Brían F. O’Byrne & Nick Court are both good actors but felt very miscast in this role. Every time they came on screen I was never able to buy them as cult figures with a worldwide brotherhood who followed their every word.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The finale suitable ties up loose ends while gently opening the door for more stories to be told.
- The cliffhanger ending is truly shocking and one that will leave viewers breathless.

CONCLUSION
All in all the second season of the last ship was by far weaker than the first season, It had a very strong opening and an equally strong ending but the middle episodes dragged the show down. However, the finale was able to lift it up from the mire and deliver an exciting and dramatic conclusion to the season’s narrative, complete with a cliffhanger ending. The show continues to have an interesting premise and characters to lead it, and this helps lift its story up from the troupes it sometimes gets entangled in. Its a suitable conclusion to the season and brings it to a strong ending.
