Inside the Houston Comics Scene: The Indie Collective Redefining Texas Comix

-

The landscape of independent storytelling is shifting, and Texas creators are leading the charge. At the heart of this regional renaissance is the Houston Comics Scene (HCS), a dedicated collective of independent comic artists, writers, and creative minds based right here in Houston, Texas.

Far from just a casual meetup, this powerhouse group has structured itself as both a launchpad for original, self-published titles and a vital support network for independent comic professionals across the Greater Houston area.

Meet the Collective Behind the Pages

The strength of the Houston Comics Scene lies in its diverse roster of talent. By pooling resources, sharing industry insights, and cross-promoting projects, these creators are proving that community is the ultimate engine for indie success.

The core collective features an impressive lineup of local trailblazers:

  • Chris Doray
  • Nico Rodriguez
  • Milton Lawson
  • Justin Prine
  • Rasheed Oduro
  • Rodney Winthrop Chinelliott
  • Andrea Chinelliott
  • Chet Presley
  • Jarrod Perez

From gritty underground aesthetics and classic sci-fi to experimental slice-of-life and manga-inspired adventures, each member actively produces standalone comic books. To tie their diverse styles together, the collective also publishes a quarterly magazine that highlights members’ work, features exclusive previews, and serves as a physical anthology of the city’s best indie talent.

Taking the Stage at Comicpalooza 2026

The collective’s momentum was on full display at Comicpalooza 2026. Held at the George R. Brown Convention Center, the group took to the panels to discuss the realities, hurdles, and triumphs of building a self-sustaining comic ecosystem in East Texas.

The panel was hosted and moderated by Jerry Schafer, the founder and manager of the Eastern Rim Con. Schafer, a long-time champion of the regional indie scene, guided a brilliant, transparent conversation about what it takes to manufacture, market, and distribute physical comic books entirely on your own terms.

For creators looking to break into the industry, the HCS panel offered insight into being an independent creator in Houston.

Supporting Independent Voices in Greater Houston

The ultimate mission of the Houston Comics Scene extends beyond their own drawing tables. By maintaining a heavy presence at regional shows, publishing their anthology, and hosting panels, they are keeping the door open for the next generation of Texas writers and illustrators.

If you want to support local art, skip the mainstream spinner racks this week and dive into the vibrant, raw, and endlessly inventive world of Houston’s premier comic collective.
